After going missing a few years ago, 2016 has seen UK hip hop emerge from the wilderness alive and well. But while Grime might be at the forefront of the scene, it’s worth remembering Britain has a rich tradition of rap that stretches back beyond 2000 – when pioneers blended UK sensibilities with US beats.
Enigmatic 27 year old Londoner rapper/producer MusicByJam follows a similar path with his thoroughly modern throwback ‘Slurred Words’. It’s a sun-dappled jam, preaching knowledge of self in the face of peer pressure. The lucid, introspective flows – coupled with neo-soul melodies – take a leaf straight out of Chance the Rapper’s playbook – slick rhymes poured over woozy beats and laid-back horns. The result is like a breath of fresh air – and you can check it out below. His sef-released EP will follow on July 1st.
