The 65th Annual Grammy Awards, held on Sunday, broke several records (Feb. 5). Beyoncé breaking the record for most Grammys won by a single artist, Dr. Dre collecting this year’s Global Impact Award, and Hip Hop marking their 50th anniversary with a monumental performance were all highlights of the evening.
Beyoncé had the most nominations going into the ceremony, and she ended up winning four times. Bey took up three awards: Best R&B Song for “Cuff It,” Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic On The Sofa,” and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul.” When her album Renaissance won the Grammy for “Best Dance/Electronic Music Album,” she became the most Grammy-awarded artist of all time, with a grand total of 32.
With Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar took home the award for Best Rap Album, while his single “The Heart 5” went on to win Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. As for the other categories, Future won Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Wait For U” starring Drake and Tems, Robert Glasper won Best R&B Album for Black Radio III, and Steve Lacy received Best Progressive R&B Album for Gemini Nights. Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” took home Record of the Year, the evening’s top prize, while Muni Long’s “Hrs & Hrs” received Best R&B Performance. LL Cool J gave Dr. Dre. the Global Impact Award at the Grammys.
The 50th anniversary of hip hop was marked with a 10-minute performance that took the audience on a journey through the genre’s history. The Roots band headlined the event, which also featured performances from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Rakim, Public Enemy, Salt N Pepa, Method Man of Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, The Lox, Too $hort, Missy Elliott, Lil Baby, and GloRilla, among many others.
In tribute to Barry Gordy and Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Chris Stapleton played a medley of Motown hits. Mary J. Blige’s rendition of “Good Morning Gorgeous” was breathtaking, while Lizzo’s performances of “Time” and “Special” were electric. For the ceremony’s remembrance part, Steve Lacy performed his popular single “Bad Habit” alongside Thundercat, while Quavo offered a heartfelt performance devoted to Takeoff. At the ceremony’s climax, DJ Khaled debuted a live rendition of his song “God Did,” which included John Legend, Friday, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and JAY-Z.
JAY-Z spoke to Elliott Wilson of TIDAL and Rap Radar about his Grammy performance, Beyoncé, and more. You may find the whole interview here.
