Album: Buju Banton “Born For Greatness”

Buju Banton

The time has come at last! The highly-anticipated new album from Buju Banton, a GRAMMY® winner, multiple Billboard chart-topper, and international reggae legend, is titled “Born For Greatness”.

This substantial corpus of work cements his position as a pioneering innovator in the genre of reggae. The tune “Body Touching Body” [with Victoria Monét] is only one example of his remarkable ability to blend not just musical styles but also cultural traditions. When Victoria adds her hypnotic R&B hook, “I wanna lie with you,” the song really heats up. Buju glides charismatically over the flowing beat, which is anchored by steel drums and wah-drenched guitar. You’re like having Bonnie and Clyde in my life; I’ll never have to miss you.

From the reflective acoustic guitar of “Ageless Time” to the choral chant for freedom uplifted by horns on the album’s closing track, “Let My People Go,” the album builds momentum like a cinematic epic, with low points of sadness balanced by high points of triumph, as in “We Find A Way” and “Trial By Fire.” On the hit single “Feel A Way,” Buju and Stephen Marley engage in a brash verbal sparring.
The album’s title tune, “Born For Greatness,” was a breakthrough for Buju. Reggaeville remarked, “Born For Greatness is a testament to his lyrical talent, an opus with 17 pieces,” while Ebro in the Morning had a lengthy interview with him to discuss the album. According to DANCEHALLMAG, “Born For Greatness consists of 17 tracks, featuring an eclectic mix of solo performances and notable collaborations.”
