Central makes a statement with new EP “No More Leak.”
It only taken two mixtapes in as many years for Central Cee’s career to completely transform. The nervous years spent on the sidelines before the Londoner’s breakthrough have formed it, just like they have for a long list of quickly ascending rappers in the past. On No More Leaks, he paints a clear picture of what’s driving him: a never-ending need for absolute and total vengeance for being disregarded. When the 2022 single “Dojaearly “‘s release threatened to impede his momentum, Cench delivered the goods (much as he did in 2021 with the PinkPantheress-inspired “Obsessed With You”). And the tiny sample took off, developing into a 90-second single that went viral and catapulted him to fame all over the world.
With this EP’s rhyme-heavy narrative of victorious reminiscence and imagination, Cench once again gets out in front of the competition and declares the end of the era of leaks.
It’s true that nothing on the EP’s four songs fits as cleanly into the snappy, lip-sync stratosphere of his earlier works, and nothing is as obviously geared toward the general public. The main character (MC) finds a new way to achieve the outstanding focus and clarity of thinking required to advance to the next level. On the DJ Snake-sampled opening track, “Chapters,” he exclaims, “Remember the rap game didn’t embrace me/Now you see the reaction,” and on the track “Bumpy Johnson,” he remembers couch-surfing in the past. It remains to be known where Central Cee will take his historic run. But—having experienced several false starts since beginning his career as a teen in 2017, as stated on “Crypto Price”—he’s more than prepared for the ups and downs.
