Desiigner Tells Funk Flex About the Day He Met Kanye West.
Despite being one of the biggest new artists of the last few years, Desiigner is still a bit of a mystery. Of course, Desiigner ended up signing to G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam, and the story behind the deal is just as crazy. As Desiigner tells it, one day he got a call from Kanye West about meeting up in L.A. Naturally, he jumped on the next thing smokin’ and met Kanye at LAX before he had to depart for London. Though their meeting was only brief, Kanye played Desiigner “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2″ for him in the car. “You ready?” Ye asked. “I got something for you.”
Oh, and at some point between driving to the airport and landing in LAX, Desiigner crashed his car.
Later that day, Desiigner hit the studio with Mike Dean, recorded “Overnight” and played music for the whole G.O.O.D. Music/DONDA crew. After that, G.O.O.D. Music COO Steven Victor secured Desiigner’s signature. “[Kanye] is all about the artistry, it’s not just rap, but the creativity,” Desiigner says. “Pusha T, when I came in, straight love. Big Sean, Travi$, 2 Chainz, Teyana — it’s just straight love from G.O.O.D. Music. You feel like a family.”
