Early Jay Z Demo Tape Surfaces Online (Stream)

Mostly unheard early Jay-Z tracks have emerged. The ‘demo tape’ gives a retro glimpse at one of rap’s greatest icons

Jay Z (formerly Jay-Z) has ascended to the highest levels of hip hop acclaim, from the humblest of drug dealing beginnings. For most, their introduction to Shawn Carter was in the form of his seminal album, Reasonable Doubt (even though it didn’t do that well initially). Well, with classic ’90s beats and double-time flows that Jay favored in his early days, a bunch of previously unheard-by-most joints have emerged.

The unbelievable / inconceivable lyrics I drop there, are leaving ni**as in shock, but I don’t stop there

Alongside early collaborator Sauce Money, Jay’s voice is instantly recognizable, even if his flow varies from track to track, and from his later tracks. Since Reasonable Doubt dropped in 1996, these tracks really go back. It’s not immediately clear where this came from, how it came to light, how it remained quiet for so long and if the JayLuminati is going to let it live, but it’s here now.

Jay-Z fans, as well as casual listeners, will enjoy the throwback vibes from one of the genre’s most successful, if not greatest artists.
