Fatman Scoop, the legendary rapper and DJ, passed away at the age of 56 after collapsing on stage last month. On Tuesday (September 24), Connecticut’s Chief Medical Officer confirmed that his death was caused by “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease,” ruling it a natural cause.
Born Isaac Freeman III, Fatman Scoop fell ill during a performance in Hamden, Connecticut, and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead hours later. His family shared a heartfelt tribute online, mourning the loss of the vibrant performer:
“With profound sadness and very heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop. Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life,” the message began.
“Fatman Scoop was not just a world-class performer; he was a father, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought laughter, support, strength, and courage to all our lives.”
Fatman Scoop was best known for his iconic voice that dominated club anthems, including his feature on Missy Elliott’s 2005 hit “Lose Control.” He was beloved for his energy and passion for music, which brought joy and positivity to audiences worldwide.
Hypertensive heart disease develops in individuals with long-term high blood pressure, putting extra strain on the heart. Atherosclerosis is a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, restricting blood flow and potentially leading to heart complications. Both conditions contributed to the music star’s untimely passing.
Missy Elliott honored her collaborator in a tribute on Instagram: “Prayers for Fatman Scoop’s family for strength during this difficult time. His voice and energy made people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades. His impact is huge and will never be forgotten.”
Ludacris also paid homage, writing: “Scoop was someone who reminded you what love truly means. He exuded passion for hip-hop and love for every person he met. His legacy will live on forever.”
