Filmmaker Alex Gibney and Jigsaw Productions teamed with Okayplayer,Okayafrica and Knitting Factory Entertainment to premiere Finding Fela – a documentary that follows the cast of FELA! as they embark upon a journey to take the production “back home” to Lagos – at the Sundance Film Festival 2014. The documentary follows the crew as they prepare for a performance at The Shrine – the storied Naija venue that stands as Fela Kuti‘s homebase and the birthplace of afrobeat. The film’s Sundance debut found everyone from the Fela-curious to serious afrobeat devotees breaking a sweat with the Fela! Band. While party continued for the duration of the festival, the importance of Fela’s politics and personal philosophy were also discussed on the red carpet as Okayafrica TV caught up with his daughter Yeni Kuti, Broadway star Sahr Ngaujah and a handful of others involved with the film’s release.
