It’s quite a journey G. Dep has been through. After nearly 13 years behind bars, the Harlem-born rapper G. Dep, real name Trevell Coleman, was released from Fishkill Correctional Facility on Thursday (Apr. 4). His release was met with warmth and support from family and friends, who joined him in a prayer circle before celebrating with his first post-prison meal at IHOP.

Coleman’s road to freedom began last year when he was among 16 individuals granted clemency by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, making him eligible for parole.

In a dramatic turn of events back in 2010, G. Dep walked into New York’s 25th Precinct and confessed to a cold case murder that occurred in Queens in 1993. He admitted to ambushing and shooting the victim during a robbery attempt.

Following his confession, the “Special Delivery” hitmaker was convicted in April 2012 and sentenced to 15 years for second-degree murder. Despite his time behind bars, he was granted temporary release in 2015 to attend his father’s funeral.

G. Dep’s journey serves as a reminder of the complexities of life and the power of redemption. As he steps back into the world outside prison walls, many will be eager to see how he navigates this new chapter and whether music will once again play a role in his life.
