Following the release of his new single ‘Preach’ featuring Donae’o which was released on Wednesday, today East London rapper Ghetts releases his new album ‘Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament’ on GIIG/Caroline International.
Preach follows ‘Black Rose’ ft. Kojey Radical, which unapologetically explores themes of feminism, diversity and marginalisation – ‘Preach’ sees Ghetts hollering his heart out and delivering ultra-technical verses over gospel pianos, sounding for all the world like an East End Outkast: it’s a track full of hard-won wisdom and undiluted street ebullience.
Though his latest tracks and visuals show an impressive and refreshing sense of growth, illustrating exactly why he has titled the album as “Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament”, Ghetts naturally does not steer away from the core lyricism and energy that has landed him as one of the true pioneers of Grime.
Ghetts’ journey began in the borough of Newham, making his first mark in the first wave of Grime, despite the genre being “already on its way” says Ghetts. From day one, his deep understanding of Hip Hop, literature and ability to articulate himself in daily conversation meant he was automatically a natural, and the scene has embraced him ever since. Respected for finding the most innovative ways of painting a picture of his personal experiences, whilst simultaneously relating to the masses, ‘Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament’ is no different. Ghetts provides a striking yet refined representation of his life and delves into topics such as fatherhood, friendship, equality, love, life and death.
