‘Black Rose’, featuring Kojey Radical, is an anthem for an exploration into intersectional feminism. The track is written from Ghetts’ perspective of raising his daughter, who features in the video, in a society that can sometimes marginalise individuals rather than encouraging diverse love and self-worth. Ghetts’ lyrics weave social commentary and personal experience producing something complex but powerful. Alongside minimalist vocal samples, strings, and the smooth reassuring harmonies of Kojey Radical, Ghetts’ bars shine as a finishing statement of empowerment.

Baby keep doing you
Don’t let this world ruin you
No matter what they say you
Are beautiful
Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder and we don’t know
Who is who
So who are they to screw when they’re screwing you.
Don’t let this world ruin you
Ghetts says of the track, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.
Ghetts is an artist who came through in the first wave of grime, and has consistently earned the undying respect of his peers and hardcore fans – but who has also exhibited strategic brilliance and hard graft throughout his career, relying consistently on wit and talent over the vagaries of fashion, bringing him to a point today where he is not only making some of the best music of his life, but personally is in a position of acceptance and acute self-knowledge. All of which is expressed in ‘Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament’: a record that has lost none of the darkness or ferocious competitiveness of grassroots grime, but at the same time is able to be full of complexity, finesse and wisdom. The album is a diverse and culturally relevant interpretation – both visually and lyrically – on Ghetts’ life, story and the times we live in now. It touches on topics of equality, female empowerment, cancer, crime & fatherhood.
Though Ghetts’s backstory is impressive and his reputation well earned, ‘Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament’ speaks for itself.
