J. Cole surprises fans with an unexpected release, dropping his introspective new track “cLOUDs” via his Inevitable blog on February 20.
In a short message, Cole shared the inspiration behind the song: “Made this a few days ago, then I added a second verse and was like, ‘man I got a blog now, I can put whatever I want up there.’” Produced by DZL, Omen, and small contributions from Cole himself, the track delivers hypnotic production paired with thought-provoking bars.
Throughout the 4-minute track, Cole reflects on his mental state and today’s societal issues, touching on everything from political turmoil to technology’s impact on humanity. “I’m that bass in your trunk, the bullet that missed Trump / The gun that jammed ’cause it seemed God had other plans,” he raps, dropping some of his most compelling lyricism yet.
