“Neighbors” is arguably the best track off J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only album, but the story behind the song is even crazier. In an interview with Complex last year, Dreamville producer Elite revealed how the song was inspired by a real-life SWAT team raid on Cole’s suburban studio in North Carolina after one of his neighbors told the police they were selling drugs.
“There was a huge investigation, like a million-dollar investigation,” Elite said. “They flew helicopters over, sent an entire SWAT team armed with weapons, broke down the door and searched the whole house.” Police, of course, found nothing.
The footage of the raid, which was included in Cole’s recent HBO documentary, has now been used as the official (but short) music video for “Neighbors,” because truth is stranger than fiction.
