As you know, Atlanta rapper 21 Savage was arrested by ICE for reported VISA issues. Much of the industry has come forth in full support of 21 and his team also started a petition for the rapper to be released. A letter from Georgia Congressman and representative Henry C. “Hank” Johnson soon followed. TMZ now reports that 21 is getting even more help, this time with some legal action by Jay-Z — who has hired a lawyer to help with the case. A statement was later released by Hov and Roc Nation.
Continue after the jump…
“The arrest and detention of 21 is an absolute travesty. His U VISA has been pending for 4 years. In addition to being a successful recording artist, Savage deserves to be reunited with his children immediately.”
Alex Spiro, the attorney hired by Jay, also issued a statement to TMZ.
“We are not going to stop until he is released, bonded out or in front of a judge. What we have here is someone who overstayed their Visa with an application pending for four years—not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offense which was vacated and sealed.”
As for 21’s current status — his co-manager Justin “Meezy” Williams tweeted an update for fans yesterday;
“Just got off phone wit Savage … he is in lockdown for 23hrs of the day no tv or any communication besides our 10 min phone calls. Everything I’ve told him that has been happening made him happy & makes this time fly by thank y’all for the support.”
Circle back soon as more details on the case emerge. #FREE21
