Jay Z Tackles Police Brutality in New Song, “Spiritual”
JAY Z is speaking out through music. In the wake of the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by law enforcement, the Roc Nation CEO decides to drop his first solo record in three years. More of a spoken word piece, “spiritual” finds JAY Z touching his own spirituality and dealing with social issues including self-worth many young African-Americans face in today’s society. “Yeah, I am not poison, no I am not poison. Just a boy from the hood that, got my hands in the air/ In despair don’t shoot,” raps Jay on the song’s chorus.
“Punch [President of Top Dawg Entertainment] told me I should drop it when Mike Brown died. Sadly I told him ‘this issue will always be relevant.’,” JAY Z says in the opening of a statement he dropped with the song. The track, recorded over a year ago, comes hours after Jay’s wife Beyoncé issued a statement on her website demanding justice and speaking out against the endless killings of black people by police officers in America.
