Jay Z was set to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York City on Thursday night (Jun. 15). The Roc Nation mogul is making history, becoming the first rapper ever to be inducted, joining follow 2017 nominees Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Peter Cetera, Chicago and Max Martin. Sadly, the Brooklyn MC was not able to make the ceremony due to his wife Beyoncé expecting to give birth to twins at any moment. In a classic moment, Hov took to Twitter to thank a list of fellow rappers that have inspired him over two decades in music.

Legends like The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Grandmaster Caz were mentioned, along with current stars like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Jeezy, Rick Ross, and Kid Cudi were named dropped. Jay even shined the light on the young generation, shouting out artists like Chance the Rapper, Travi$ Scott, Quavo of the Migos, Playboi Carti and Detroit up-and-comer Tee Grizzley.

Ending his rare interaction on social media, Jay Z tweeted a video of former U.S. President Barack Obama, who inducted the icon into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
