This month, Jamaican reggae superstar Kabaka Pyramid sets off on a triumphant tour of the UK and Europe in the wake of his 2023 Grammy victory for Best Reggae Album for his LP The Kalling.
Tour stops for Kabaka in the United Kingdom include the sold-out The Jazz Cafe in London and the legendary Blues Kitchen in Manchester, among others. Kabaka will be touring the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland with his socially oriented style of hip-hop infused reggae.
Kabaka Pyramid is a cornerstone of the modern Reggae Revival, having broken through to the forefront of the Jamaican reggae industry with his 2011 album Rebel Music thanks to hit singles like “Free from Prison.”
Both “Chains” and “Warrior,” which both star Protoje, are excellent examples. His lyrical approach and hard-hitting rhythms were clearly influenced by his background in hip hop, which paved the way for his meteoric rise to fame, which has so far featured guest appearances on tracks by Chase & Status and Rudimental and will culminate with the release of his Grammy-winning album The Kalling in 2023.
The album, which Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley produced, has fifteen tracks and a number of guest appearances from both longtime colleagues like Damian Marley and Protoje and newcomers like Buju Banton and Stephen Marley. After the success of his first album, ‘Kontraband,’ with which it shares a name, his second effort, ‘The Kalling,’ is a symphony of cutting-edge modern reggae that communicates with the listener on the highest levels.
To me, the point of making music isn’t fame or fortune, but rather raising the vibration of whomever happens to tune in, and that’s what The Kalling is all about. “While the majority seek pleasure and sense gratification, there are a few whom the Most High kall upon to keep the balance inna earth,” says the Kabaka. When the kall comes, you can hear me responding with music.
and throughout this record”
The album features the singles “The Kalling” (featuring Stephen Marley, Protoje, and Jesse Royal), “Make Things Work,” “Red, Gold, and Green” (featuring Damian Marley), “Grateful” (featuring Jemere Morgan), and “Faded Away” (featuring Buju Banton), with additional production from Kabaka Pyramid, Stephen Marley, and Young Pow.
