Kendrick Lamar Interview with BBC Radio 1

Kendrick Lamar Talks ‘Black Panther,’ GRAMMYs Performance & “Wokeness” with BBC Radio 1.

As his sold-out DAMN. Tour made its way across the pond earlier this month, Kendrick Lamar sat down with BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo for a brief yet typically insightful interview. Kung Fu Kenny talked about how being a hype man for Jay Rock helped him develop his live show, his epic GRAMMYs performance with Dave Chappelle, and the creative process behind making the Black Panther soundtrack. “I wanted to embody something that represented our black culture but it also represented the creative side of the movie, where you have these two characters,” he said. “When you hear the songs, you hear the narrative of that personality.”

Kendrick also weighed in on the current trend of artists and celebrities being “woke,” which is up to you to decide what’s real and what’s fake. “You can say whatever you want to say on the internet,” he said. “But it’s gon’ come a time when you gon’ have to put your money where your mouth is because it’s people out there that’s really hurt and really need knowledge and understanding, and you gon’ have to give them that.”
