Kendrick Lamar speaks on the idea of being a style icon, Jay Z’s style influence, and the possibility of designing in the future.
We’ve seen Kendrick Lamar’s style progress over the last little while, with the rapper getting more and more nods for his fashion sense. The TDE emcee spoke with Hypebeast about his status as a style icon, his influences, and whether or not he would ever enter the design world.
“I feel comfortable with being a style icon,” said Kendrick. “That’s something new. I’ve been hearing that for quite some time this past year.”
K.Dot also gave props to one rapper who inspired his style. “In my generation, Jay Z always been that dude,” he said. “You want to put that jersey on. You want to put that button-up on. You want to get your grown-man on and everything nice and fitted. That’s when everything as far as the baggy look started to die down just a little bit, when everybody wanted to feel a little bit more like they’re Jay.”
Kendrick stressed that he’s still not interested in getting into design at this point. “Creating a pair of jeans, I could do it, but my heart is not there,” he said. “My heart is in the music. Once my heart gets there, and I fully devote myself, then I’ll do it, but I don’t want to play with nobody’s profession that they’ve been creating their whole life just because I’ve got a lot of money to do it now.”
