Kid Cudi Opens Up About Drugs, Depression & Hawaii Sessions With Kanye West.

Kid Cudi has never been one to hide his emotions. Just a few months ago, he admitted on Twitter that he “thinks about blowin [his] brains out a handful a times a week.” Even though he’s built a cult following by pouring his heart into his music (and social media), the source of Cudi’s sadness has never been fully clear.

In an upcoming interview with Pharrell and Scott Vener on their Beats 1 show, OTHERtone, Cudi delves into his battle with drugs, depression and fame. The Cleveland native reveals how the pressures of fame put him in a dark place, particularly because he felt guilty about having money and success while “everybody that I had ever met in my life” continued to struggle. “I’ll tell you the truth, it’s what drove me to drugs,” he says.

Cudi also talks about how he became obsessed with dead icons like Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, and was convinced that “these are my heroes, they understand me and if I die this way then this is destiny.” It was only until he got arrested and realized that “people give a fuck about me” that he was able to turn things around and finish his sophomore album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager.

Cudi also reflects on his early grind working at the BAPE store in New York, being flown out to Hawaii to work with Kanye West and writing hooks for Jay Z’s The Blueprint III. Watch a few interview clips below and tune into Beats 1 this Sunday (July 10) at 3pm EST for the full episode.
