With his distinct flow and a collection of genre-defying melodies behind him, Cardiff’s Mace The Great unleashes another explosive single in the form of “Wicked & Bad,” a track that continues to broaden and redefine the narrative of Welsh music.
The drill-inspired track is a dark and gloomy addition to Mace’s discography, with a storm of heavy 808s and distinctive syncopated percussion typical of the genre. Lyrically, he’s full of self-assurance, blending a patois-inspired tune with wheel-up worthy, braggadocious verses like “I was scheduled for support and I shut down more than the headline”— Mace believes he’s destined for success.
“This is the perfect follow-up track from ‘Loyalty,‘” he says of his new hit.
Mace The Great has been pushing the boundaries of Welsh rap. Endorsements from his homeland are many, having been chosen by the Welsh Government to perform at an industrial showcase in New York on the same day as Wales plays the USA in their first World Cup game since 1958. He participated in Size? and Mixtape Madness’ premiere Cardiff cypher, as well as the BBC Documentary Wales: Music Nation, presented by Huw Stephens, which highlighted the thriving local rap culture.
It’s apparent that Mace’s influence extends well beyond his birthplace, proudly waving the flag and propelling one of Wales’ most dynamic and vibrant music scenes ahead.
