Watch Macklemore ans Ryan Lewis Discuss “White Privilege II” on ‘Sway In The Morning’.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took social media and the hip-hop community by storm with their new single “White Privilege II.” Touching on the elephant-in-the-room subject, the record featuring singer Jamila Woods, touched on white supremacy, cultural appropriation, racism, the Black Lives Matter movement and more.
The Seattle duo paid a visit to Sway In The Morning this week, where they discussed the song’s purpose, inserting themselves into the conversation in the most authentic way possible, not shying away from the topic of cultural appropriation, the record taking a year to create starting with the non-indictment of Darren Wilson, and joining the protests soon after the decision not to go to trial.
Macklemore also touches on name-dropping Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus and Elvis on the song, explaining it wasn’t a diss towards them, instead throwing himself into the mix when it came to cultural appropriation. Watch the full 49-minute interview below.
