Mychelle, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Hackney, has dropped a new song called “Hurts” —
A heartbreaking ballad about a relationship gone bad and the pain of breaking up, “Hurts” is about as depressing a listen as it gets. Mychelle sings, “There’s still pieces of us that I adore, but it’s evident that we can’t keep on,” acknowledging that the relationship is hopeless.
The song “Hurts” is Mychelle’s first release of 2023. A stylistic departure from her previous song “Tightrope,” which was released at the year’s close.
On “Hurts,” which she co-produced with Hugo M. Hardy (Poppy Ajudha, tinyumbrellas, David Gray, Sfven), Mychelle draws more directly from her indie, folk, and alternative roots. Similar to the folkier sounds of artists like Corinne Bailey Rae, Lianne La Havas, Michael Kiwanuka, and Sade. Even yet, Mychelle’s long-time fans will recognise this musical territory from songs like “Pressure” and “Younger Self,” both of which she has previously recorded.
The song was written during Mychelle and Hugo’s first session together, she claimed. Working with him was a pleasure since he captured the indie tones I like. As a musician who has played the guitar and performed as a street performer for quite some time, I have always appreciated blending the sounds of folk and indie with those of soul and R&B.
Thea Gajic (Stormzy, Jords, A2), who also directed the ‘Tightrope’ video, oversaw the production of the matching visual. Following in the footsteps of their past collaborations, “Hurts” has Abi Corbett and Kieran Taylor-Ford as the primary protagonists, with Mychelle playing a supporting part. The video is shot in a fly-on-the-wall style, capturing the many stages of a breakup.
