Mychelle Releases “IT’S not YOU, it’s me” EP Alongside “Magical” Video

Mychelle

“IT’S not YOU, it’s me” is Hackney singer, songwriter, and guitarist Mychelle’s new EP.

“IT’S not YOU, it’s me” is subtle and poignant, revealing Mychelle’s self-awareness. The album’s five tracks depict Mychelle’s personal difficulties with self-worth due to emotionally taxing friendships and sexual encounters.

“When one is going through a breakup or the end of a friendship, all of these feelings coexist. It’s painful to go through, but knowing when you deserve more is crucial,” said Mychelle.

Mychelle, like Tracy Chapman and Michael Kiwanuka, explores her indie, folk, and acoustic pop influences on the EP while staying faithful to her R&B and neo-soul roots.

In commemoration of the occasion, Mychelle released “Magical,” a gloriously ethereal and joyful song about embracing yourself and boldly recognising that we’re all works in progress, produced by Eddie Allen.

I was complaining to my co-writer that all I write are dismal love songs, and I wanted to create something to cheer myself up and say, “This is me; take it or leave it!” – Mychelle said.

The accompanying video was directed by Korrie Powell, who was influenced by Spike Jonze. It is a coming-of-age story about two sisters who struggle with colorism, self-esteem, and negative body image in a society where alienation is common.

Thea Gajic’s direction builds on the aesthetic style established by Mychelle’s previous videos (‘Tightrope’ and ‘Hurts’), creating believable settings populated by interesting characters with compelling backstories and using realistic cinematography to explore universal themes like belonging, friendship, and love.
