Hey Panini. While “Old Town Road” remains No. 1 for an 11th week, Lil Nas X delivers the follow-up “Panini.”
Over production from Take A Daytrip and Dot da Genius, the 20-year-old rapper reflects on the effects of his newfound fame. “I thought you want this for my life, for my life / Said you wanted to see my thrive / You lied,” he sings. “Just say to me what you want from me.”
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1, Nas opened up about the track, which interpolates Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” “One of the craziest things about ‘Panini,’ is it introduced me to Nirvana’s album Nevermind,” he said. “It’s like I always seen the cover but I never actually listened to it. And people was like, ‘Wow, he sampled Nirvana.’ I was like, no. It’s like, I didn’t realize I was using almost the exact same melody.”
He is also eyeing Drake for the “Panini” remix. “I really want this to happen. I already know it’s going to happen like Drake to get on the remix of ‘Panini,’” he said. “I wanted Drake to be on ‘Old Town Road’ remix ’cause it was going to be a hip-hop remix, too. Things didn’t go as planned. This man’s a goat. He’s the biggest inspiration musically for everybody.”
Nas will release his debut EP 7 on Friday featuring the 8x platinum hit “Old Town Road,” plus contributions from Travis Barker, Boi-1da, Ryan Tedder, and London on Da Track.
