The newest varied offering from Wolverhampton-born musician NEONE The Wonderer, “RagJazz,” is awash in earthy, nostalgic overtones, floating above warm Rhodes and brilliant percussion. The singer’s crystal-clear vocals and emphasis on his rich Jamaican roots stand out. The jazz-influenced music begins with reflective touches before shifting into hazy hip-hop breaks, providing NEONE with the opportunity to showcase his lyrical skill while portraying the concept and importance of free thinking. By questioning accepted norms and breaking through cultural barriers, NEONE has established himself as an innovative, self-aware new talent.
Speaking on the “RagJazz”, NEONE mentions: “”RagJazz” was actually my first attempt of trying to fuse genres after writing an essay breaking down fusion as a colliding of cultures and not just genres, I started it 5 years ago. I still remember showing it to a reggae band at the time and being told “this isn’t reggae” then they tried to “fix” it for me. Thankfully I knew not to listen to them, and I found the old file finished it off.”
A true alchemist of the creative arts, NEONE’s captivating stories between his environment and lyrical journey through myth, wonder and life experiences have been showcased across stages at Sofar Sounds, Soho House, Camden’s Jazz Café and The Great Escape. With support slots for the likes of Ivan Ave and highly-acclaimed vocalist James Gillespie, while working alongside some of the most innovative underground talents across London including Eerf Evil and Meron T, NEONE has drawn swift critical attention across the likes of BBC 1XTRA (Jamz Supernova), RINSE FM, REPREZENT and NTS.
