Fifteen years after the passing of the late Notorious B.I.G., an unreleased interview with the late music mogul has surfaced online showing Biggie talking about family and fame.
Based on the behind-the-scenes footage from B.I.G.’s “Warning” music video, Big Poppa recalled hearing his first record on the radio.
“I was in the chicken spot around my way and me and my boys, we was hustlin’ and I heard the “Real Love” remix. I was buggin’. We was buggin’. It ain’t nothing. I don’t even need to be trippin’ off that as long as my peoples is with me, my peoples is having a good time, my moms is alright, my daughter’s alright, it’s all good. That fame, I leave that alone. That’s where the ego starts. They start hating you and they really wanna stick you for your paper for real.” (Video Source)
He also explained why the “Biggie Smalls” moniker was no longer getting used.
“[How is it being Biggie?] It’s big. Notorious B.I.G. It’s the first time cause I got some papers in the mail. The original Biggie Smalls said he’s gonna sue me for everything I got if I use his name again. We gotta get some kind of money so please, anybody if you see me, my name is the Notorious B.I.G. You can call me BIG, Notorious, whatever. No more Biggie Smalls. That is dead, wet. Please don’t ever call me that again cause I’ll be coming to your house to eat when I’m dead a** broke. The original black leather jacket worn by the late Brooklyn rap artist Biggie Smalls (aka ‘The Notorious B.I.G.’) will be sold at a three-day, four session sale planned for April 19-21 by Philip Weiss Auctions. The event will take place at Philip Weiss Auctions’ spacious gallery, located at #1 Neil Court in Oceanside. Internet bidding will be provided by Proxibid.com and Auctionzip.com. The Biggie Smalls jacket is expected to attract intense bidder interest, mainly because the rapper was a larger-than-life figure, both literally and figuratively. Smalls was born Christopher George Latore Wallace on May 21, 1972. He took the name Biggie Smalls after a character in the 1975 movie Let’s Do It Again and became a central figure in the East Coast hip-hop scene. (Press Release)
Considered as one of hip-hop’s best ever, 112’s Slim recently spoke to SOHH about his bond with Biggie and how much of an impact he had on him at the start of his career.
“Every time I am working on an album, I feel like the Notorious B.I.G. is with me. Every time. Especially when I’m on stage, every time. It’s a must that I play these records and I do the 112 records and it’s amazing. I miss him a lot. Can you imagine what would have popped off by now if he was still alive? At the end of the day, I miss him and at the same time, I feel like he’s with me and in my heart. I love him to death.” (SOHH Guest Star)
