Watch Paloma Ford’s ‘Jada’ Video
The 1996 crime action film Set It Off is one of the (many) defining moments in Black cinema history, and has either inspired or spawned a legion of copycat movies, style choices, Tumblr pages, and everything in between. California-reared songstress Paloma Ford was influenced by the lead character, Lida “Stoney” Newsome (played by Jada Pinkett Smith), so much that she crafted a song in her honor,”Jada”.
The single, taken from her upcoming EP Nearly Civilized (which is due sometime in October), now gets a matching set of visuals which are (not-so-) coincidentally inspired by Set If Off. The clip has her lounging around in a desert while counting her riches, perhaps acquired from a bank robbery (or three), which serves as a quasi-epilogue to the film. See what I mean, above.
