A movie called Hidden Figures is coming out on Christmas. It tells the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, three mathematical geniuses who helped calculate the right trajectory for people to get to and orbit the moon. (Johnson is 98 and still alive today, by the way.)
Pharrell is assisting Hans Zimmer with the score as well as handling the soundtrack, so it’s only proper we get new music from Mr. Williams amidst the promotion of the film, which arrives on December 25th.
“Runnin'” has Pharrell detailing Johnson’s beginnings in West Virginia and the racism she faced while growing up in school. She graduated high school at 14 and started grad school at the segregated West Virginia University at 20, when she was one of three black students who ever attended the school.
Hidden Figures starts Taraji P. Henson as Johnson and features Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner and others. Listen to “Runnin'” below.
Skateboard P also released “Surrender,” featuring Lalah Hathaway.
