Pittsburgh’s Owey is an artist who has taken life’s adversity and rather than let it define him, has turned it into an energy that he uses to power his endless drive and passion for not just success, but growth and longevity. He grew up in a single mother household on the Westside of Pittsburgh, but was also fortunate to have a father who committed himself to being a part of his life, filling him in on the game so he knew how things really were. This knowledge and grounding would be the foundation for the work ethic that defines him today. With his new single for “Keep It Real,” Owey drops a tune that shows an artist fast on the rise but also grateful to be tethered to the roots that shaped him.
Influenced musically by Master P, Eazy E, Trick Daddy, Jay-Z, and LL Cool J, Owey brings an interesting mix to today’s music. A mix that in an era where everything sounds the same, it’s very much needed. His soothing baritone vocal range delivers his lines with exceptionally smooth efficiency, which was a big part of the swell of support that came his way after the release of his previous single for “Whoa,” featuring Young Dolph & the late Bankroll Fresh. With the wind at his back and the release of the stellar “Keep It Real,” Owey was enlisted to jump on the Forever Straight Tour alongside Riff Raff and Dolla Bill Gates. Currently rolling through the US, Owey has been lighting up social media with daily proof of just how high of a bar he sets every night for the headliners on the tour.
“Keep It Real” is a no-frills clip showcasing the life and times of Owey. Beautifully shot across the city landscape (Atlanta, for the curious) by director Wiley Abbas, the video takes Owey everywhere from the far off industrial yards to the west all the way to top of the tallest buildings downtown. In between copacetic performances for the camera, choice shots of Owey with his young children at the street fair highlight his motivation for keeping it real in a sometimes very complex life. Even in the face of complicated family and life dynamics, he’s a man who is simply looking for put one foot in front of the other and climb the mountaintop together.
