Since ’93 hosted a spectacular evening on Tuesday, uniting influential figures from the UK’s music, lifestyle, and cultural sectors to commemorate Black History Month. Held at Kindred in Hammersmith, the annual event honored two icons—Lorna Clarke, BBC’s Director of Music, and Lord Michael Hastings, an esteemed leader in public affairs and corporate social responsibility—for their monumental contributions to their respective fields.
Founded in 2013, Since ‘93 has supported some of the most prominent names in domestic and international music, including Zeze Millz, Wizkid, Popcaan, and Aitch. Their Black History Month celebration has become a cornerstone in paying homage to those who have enriched the industry while inspiring future generations of leaders.
Lorna Clarke’s storied career has spanned over three decades, impacting the music industry and beyond. A pivotal figure at the BBC, Clarke has championed major music initiatives, from founding the Electric Proms to overseeing networks like Radio 2, 6 Music, and Asian Network. Her career trajectory continued to soar as she became Controller of Pop in 2019, managing the BBC’s five national popular music networks and spearheading high-profile projects like My Life as a Rolling Stone and Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World, a documentary executive produced by Chuck D. As attendees looked back on her impressive journey, industry icons Jackie Davidson, Treble T, and Nadia Jae offered keynote reflections on Clarke’s achievements and her transformative impact.
Lord Dr. Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE was also recognized for his vast accomplishments across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. His career began in teaching and evolved through groundbreaking roles at the BBC, including the network’s first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. As a former Commissioner for Racial Equality and the first Black member of the Metropolitan Police Committee, Hastings has continuously advocated for racial equity and social justice. His accolades include a CBE, a UNICEF Global Award, and an honorary Doctorate from the University of Kent. Since ‘93’s Founder Riki Bleau and Dayo Okewale led the tribute, celebrating Hastings as a beacon of leadership for minority communities.
Attendees included top executives from BBC 1Xtra, Apple Music, Spotify, BET, and entertainment figures such as Eddie Kadi, Nadia Jae, and filmmakers Femi Oyeniran and Nicky ‘Slimting’ Walker.
Since ‘93’s annual Black History Month event continues to shine as a celebration of Black excellence, honoring those who have paved the way while inspiring future trailblazers.
