Skepta shares his new single, “SHUTDOWN” from “#Konnichiwa”.
Over the last few weeks North London Grime artist Skepta has received a shout out from Drake, and mobbed on stage with Kanye West during his “All Day” performance. Judging by what we saw with Young Thug last year, those may be the two most important co-signs one can earn in the rap world, and Skepta is well aware.
Taking advantage of the hype, the UK spitter has shared the new single from his upcoming #Konnichiwa LP, and while we’re pretty sure he hasn’t copped an OVO face tatt yet, he’s wearing the Drake stamp proudly. “SHUTDOWN” begins with a sample of Drake’s now infamous ‘truss me daddi’ quip from a recent Instagram video, and closes with more of the rapper’s recently adopted West Indian meets Scarborough accent in a clip from his short film “Jungle”. Between the bookends is some straight-ahead, uncompromising Grime, making Skepta a promising figure to bring the sound to North America without meeting us halfway.
