It has been verified by law enforcement in Durban that rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes was killed on Florida Road on Friday night in a drive-by shooting.

One other person, thought to be AKA’s bodyguard, was injured, while one other person, said to be a close friend of AKA’s, was shot and killed.

IOL independently corroborated the specifics of the shooting from well-placed police sources, who could not be identified because they are not authorised to talk to the media. This was before the provincial police acknowledged the occurrence.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a police spokesman, later acknowledged that two murder investigations were underway, but that the motivations for the killings were yet unknown.

Forbes’ status as a famous musician was established, but not by name.

It has been speculated that AKA was killed in a drive-by shooting when he stood in front of the Wish Restaurant.

Around 9:30, gunfire erupted from two unidentified vehicles.

The second victim, believed to be a close friend of AKA, was also shot and killed, but his name remains unclear at this time.

There were social media postings indicating that AKA was going to play at a Durban club called YUGO for his birthday party.

Following the news of the incident, Da Les sent a tweet. Another close and distraught friend of the artist has verified his death.

AKA passed away while he was just 35. In 2009, he shot to stardom with the singles Mistakes, In My Walk, and Do It. His first album, Altar Ego, was recognised by Metro FM as Best New Comer, Best Hip Hop, and Best Produced Album. Supa Mega’s fiancee Anele Tembe plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepper Club Hotel in Cape Town over two years ago.
