Spotify’s Most Popular Music of 2017

Like they always do about this time, Spotify have revealed their 2017 Year In Music lists, ranking the most popular artists, songs and albums on their streaming service over the last 12 months. After being dominated by Drake for the last two consecutive years, Ed Sheeran claims the plaudits in 2017.

The British singer-songwriter has been named Spotify’s most streamed male artist and most streamed artist overall with 47 million monthly listeners (6.3 billion streams in total). Sheeran’s ÷ LP was the most popular album of 2017 with 3.1 billion streams, while his hit single “Shape of You” racked up 1.4 billion plays, making it the most streamed song in Spotify’s history.

Despite Sheeran’s dominance, hip-hop, which was officially named the most popular genre in the U.S. earlier this year, left its fingerprints all over Spotify in 2017.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar were two of the most popular global artists in 2017, with More Life and DAMN.being among the five most streamed albums. Migos were the fifth most streamed group, while Lil Pump and Trippie Redd were two of the biggest breakout acts of the last year.

According to Spotify data, hip-hop listening increased 74% over the past year, an astonishing feat considering the genre’s already-ubiquitous presence in 2016 (Drake was the most streamed artist last year. He also had the most streamed album, Views, and the most streamed song, “One Dance.”)

R&B didn’t perform too poorly in 2017, either. Rihanna was crowned the most popular female artist while The Weeknd streamed his way to a few end-of-year placements thanks to the popularity of his Starboy album.
