Brooklyn-based duo Stephen Krieger and Erik Laroi, known as The Formalist, swiftly unveil their soft, sombre sophomore single titled “Finite.” Following the success of their recent ambient and alluring single “Happenstance,” “Finite” is set to captivate audiences with its intimate and emotional resonance.
Drawing from their unique blend of ambient and experimental influences, The Formalist presents “Finite” as a deeply personal exploration of loss, memory, and the longing for connection. Laroi’s evocative vocals lead listeners through a solemn sonic experience that is melancholic yet hopeful, reflecting on the fragility of life and the enduring power of human connection.
Contemplating the creation of “Finite,” Laroi & Krieger share, “We think ‘Finite’ is in some ways the most personal or intimate song on the album. We were first writing it during that period of time in New York in early Covid, when people were worried about what could happen.”
As the duo navigated the uncertain landscape of early 2020, “Finite” emerged as a poignant meditation on the fleeting nature of existence and the profound impact of those we hold dear. With its richly layered explorative, electronic instrumentation and raw, emotive vocals, the track aptly demonstrates The Formalist’s ability to translate complex emotions into captivating soundscapes.

Expanding on the musical evolution of “Finite,” Krieger explains, “I had worked out the basics of the track, the synth loops and the rhythmic feel of it, and the drop into this big boomy chorus – and I’d basically arrived at one chord for it. The whole chorus was one word, and this one droning chord. And Erik took it and wrote this beautiful chord sequence around it on guitar which really elevated the whole track.”
