Last month, various reports surfaced that Tinashe was dropped from her home label since 2012, RCA Records. The first clue came from fans discovering the R&B singer was no longer listed as an artist on the label’s website. Soon after, Tinashe would post on Instagram a screencap of the “Error 404 – Page Not Found” message found on the website, adding to the speculation. On Monday (Feb. 18), Tinashe’s long-time manager, Mike Nazzaro, officially confirmed the news to Rolling Stone. “She wasn’t dropped,” said Nazzaro in a statement. “We initiated for her to be released. It was a positive split for her. It’s giving her back creative control.”
While the separation took a while to be completed, Nazzaro says the split has been final for “a month or so.” The news comes after Tinashe’s sophomore album, JOYRIDE, dropped last year. The album failed to perform commercially, debuting at No. 58 on Billboard, moving 9,800 album units opening week. “She’s excited for this next step in her career,” says Nazzaro. “We’re trying to decide now, if we want new partners, who the next ones will be.”
