Listen to Tunde Olaniran’s new song – “Hungry.”
A darkly visceral, pulsing 808. The yelp of a skittering, bouncing synth. The ringing echo of a blade being drawn. All of these production elements mark a deeper dive into the hybrid club and electronic pop sound Tunde Olaniran began to explore on his 2015 debut LP, Transgressor. The opening line (“Open my mouth to start / hungry to taste your heart”) expresses an urgent desire to connect at a primal level. “I kept thinking about taking communion, the imagery of kneeling with your mouth and eyes open,” Tunde recalls,
“there’s a hunger there, and an ecstasy in submission to that hunger.”
Olaniran pushes his voice and production to new limits; the hook is a glistening pop vocal and lush synth pad that’s built then snatched away to reveal an addictive, hyperkinetic drop with stuttering toms and a helium vocal ad-lib. “The ‘Guess what? I’m wild.’ line is a nod to how unexpected my live show is to folks that know me but not my music,” Tunde laughs.
“It’s always a shock and I want to bottle that moment and try to place it into the three minutes of this track.”
