Tyga Shares New Dancehall Inspired Track “1 of 1.”

As you can see by the cover art, showing a woman body-painted in the Rasta colors, Tyga’s new summer single, “1 of 1,” fully embraces the island sounds that have been trending in the hip-hop world lately. Right away, the sounds are familiar…very familiar. It starts out with a similar loop to the one heard on Drake and Rihanna’s “Work,” and soon, the rhythm begins to mimic another dancehall-inspired, OVO-produced hit: “Controlla.” As the song goes on, Tyga uses almost the exact same singing flow that Drake showed off on “Controlla.” Unlike “Controlla,” he does rap a verse in the Jamaican patois, but aside from that, it’s a wonder he was able to release “1 of 1” as a single and not a remix.This is the sound of Summer ’16, and Tyga’s foray into dancehall — though not exactly original — will likely earn him some airplay on mainstream radio. Boi-1da, who contributed to both “Work” and “Controlla,” recently bemoaned the prevalence of “terrible” attempts at dancehall, specifically implicating Tory Lanez’ “Luv.” I wonder what he thinks of “1 of 1″…

Tyga, whose father is Jamaican, has already been to Kingston to shoot the video, and it seems like his presence was welcomed by the locals. Expect the “1 of 1” video to arrive shortly. The track can now be purchased on iTunes.
