Watch Wasiu’s “Outer Space” Video
Montreal rapper Wasiu revisits his MTLiens EP with the visual for the album’s opening track, “Outer Space,” navigating his own bleak, black-and-white space inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The whole idea of his last project was to, in all accounts, show off sites and sounds of his city, which were undoubtedly influenced by southern hip-hop (namely Outkast). Wasiu spoke to The FADER, who premiered the video, about how the song and video push those themes:
Of course, MTLiens is a play on Outkast‘s classic ATLiens album. WhereasATLiens had a more welcoming atmosphere and southern hospitality to it, MTLiens is the polar opposite—just as MTL is geographically to ATL. Just as hip-hop was dominated by east coast/west coast in the mid-’90s and Atlanta was under that shadow, Montreal is under Toronto’s shadow from being recognized as a scene.
