“YAWA” is the second single released by award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter Fireboy DML this year under YBNL/EMPIRE. The song is about how he is letting go of his troubles and enjoying the summer with “no yawa” (or “no problems”).
Following the heartfelt single “Someone,” which detailed the highs and lows of a successful musician’s romantic life, comes this new offering. A confident “Man on a mission, I see no competition” from Fireboy sets the tone for the rest of the song.
The song has a lively rhythm that combines traditional drumming with a contemporary Afro-pop cadence. In the bridge, he emphasises the track’s carefree mood by declaring, “don’t give a f*ck,” which he illustrates by forgetting about his problems and “giving it all on the dancefloor 24/7.” At the song’s conclusion, a string instrumental harmonises with the vocals, creating the impression that your problems are vanishing.
With the top down, the wind in his face, and the city lights illuminating the night sky, Fireboy can be seen cruising across the city in the music video directed by Primo and Perliks. As he and his date speed down the street, the brilliant cityscape in the background, the mood is set. Later, he is surrounded by women who have their noses in the clouds as they admire his success and read a newspaper headline about him, which he dismissively tosses aside. Fireboy displays a “no yawa” attitude by crumpling up the newspaper and hurling it towards the camera as the video concludes.
