Nigerian Afropop artist Adekunle Gold has unveiled his new single ‘Kelegbe Megbe (Know Your Level)’, out now.
With its jazzy horns and live instrumentation, ‘Kelegbe Megbe (Know Your Level)’ pays homage to the traditional sounds of highlife and Afrobeat in Adekunle’s previous work while mixing mainstream pop sounds, giving highlife a fresh interpretation.
The accompanying video, which is directed by renowned Nigerian filmmaker Clarence Abiodun Peters who has worked with the likes of Burna Boy, Rema, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid, seeks to optimise the contemporary coolness of the new Nigerian cultural renaissance.
The concept for the video is not obeying any rules and doing what feels good. Echoing the song’s message that you should follow your own lead and not adhere to the expectations of other people or society.
Speaking in detail on the themes behind the single, Adekunle Gold says – “When you know who you are, what you represent and are fully confident in yourself, you stop listening to opinions, trends and suggestions, good or bad because if you believe the good from a source, you better believe the bad from that same source, after all, human beings are fickle.
“As much as I do this for the love of you, I also do it for the love of me. This is why I march to the beat of my own drum, I do things my own way, ‘I get my vibe” and ‘I get my vibe’. Kelegbe Megbe – Let everyone else know their level.”
