Opening up the EP with the rhythmic, throwback R&B-infused ‘Damsel’, it’s quickly apparent that I.M.O have an entirely original quality to their sound. The band are unapologetically upbeat, smooth and soulful, with nods to a multitude of genres that range from Hip-Hop to classic Soul and into chart-worthy Pop realms. Hints of hazy neo-psychedelia creep into their other-worldly soundscapes, bringing in brass melodies and shuffling, energetic beats. I.M.O’s sound is encapsulated by their motto: “Music designed to make you feel good”.
Releasing a slick and suave music video for the EP’s focus track ‘Don’t Get Upset’, I.M.O show off their creative tendencies as viewers get to soak up the band’s infectious energy and playful personalities.
To say that I.M.O’s music makes you feel good is an understatement- and that’s not only because the young five piece band from Birmingham (consisting of vocalist Corey K, bassist CJ Thompson, guitarist Jayvian Wickham, drummer Ashleigh Hepburn, and brass multi-instrumentalist Matthew Parnell) makes that their tagline. It’s how the group executes it. It’s hard to resist the infectious melodies and memorable hooks sitting on top of their dance invoking grooves.
