Jon Moodie captures the reality for so many people with his Garage Soul debut single, ‘Get What You Want.’ He soberly sings “the rich keep getting richer just like they planned it”. Straight off the block, Jon rattles with attitude and a strutting, soulful swagger.
Jon may have spent his childhood in the rural Catskills but he grew up in the grime of New York City, and his sound is caked in it. It’s a fierce pop juggernaut, infused with soul, hip-hop drums, and dirty garage rock. His voice instantly catches you – a raspy, sultry instrument, immediately differentiating him from the pack.
The sonics are equally divergent: entwined in the past, but somehow reborn and crafted into a bang-up-to-date radio sound. ‘Get What You Want’ leads with dramatic piano chords that immediately demand your attention, while the shuffling hip-hop drums and fuzz bass runs make it clear that this is something very, very special. It has the purity of the Sixties, the grit of the Seventies and the spirit of right now. It’s not confined by its blend, however; it transcends it. If you ripped it in half, it would have ‘timeless’ written all the way down the middle.
And, the lyrical theme is perhaps best demonstrated by the supposedly unlucky release date. Jon, himself, elected Friday the 13th to drop “Get What You Want,” and has adopted #FckLck as his promotional hashtag for all things social media.
The industrious determination exhibited in the lyrics is a manifesto that Jon lives by. Hence, Jon being Jon, a prolific songwriter and artist, has so many hits lined up that he has chosen to drop a new single every 6-8 weeks through the rest of 2018.
As the first of the series of releases, ‘Get What You Want’ is a self-assured Madhattan trip, distracted by the dazzling lights, the weird characters and the unexpected experiences that the struggle of city life brings. With a debut this strong, we see Jon clearly – gloves up – for what will come in 2018.
