The Pulitzer Prize winners were announced today at Columbia University, with Kendrick Lamar being recognized for his latest GRAMMY-winning, chart-topping album. Host Dana Canedy called DAMN. “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
Unsurprisingly, Kendrick Lamar is the first hip-hop artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for music, which has traditionally been awarded to classical, opera and jazz composers like Henry Threadgill, Caroline Shaw and the late Ornette Coleman.
