Vic Mensa’s excellent debut project INNANETAPE turned five a few months ago. The reason I bring it up is because I’ve been perplexed by most of what he’s released since then. Even his swole Tom Morello look feels like a jarring departure from the young, hungry Chicago rapper who could write summer bops, heartfelt eulogies and heady verses with ease.
Vic’s new single, “Dark Things,” is the biggest head-scratcher so far. It sounds like the label asked him for his best Juice WRLD impression (or Lil Uzi Vert, take your pick). Or maybe the label isn’t to blame and he’s just going through an identity crisis. Either way, it’s making me depressed.
I’m only judging you because I love you, Vic.
