Vic Mensa released his first single of the year, “STRAWBERRY LOUIS VUITTON,” through Roc Nation. Thundercat and R&B singer Maeta sing and play instruments on the song, which has a beautiful music video in which Mensa skydives in a custom-made Virgil Abloh suit while playing guitar and singing to a woman on the ground. Vic says he created Strawberry Louis Vuitton while watching Virgil’s final LV video with Saul Williams. “The sample appealed to me, so I chopped it, built the beat, and composed the song right away. Freestyle. Thundercat performed the bridge while I was in Chicago for my art exhibition. I felt like Virgil gave me this song—the gift that keeps on giving—when he died. Vic Mensa, who was nominated for a Grammy, produced and co-directed “Strawberry Louis Vuitton.” He set a high bar for his fans with this work.
The Chicago-based musician releases the song at a pivotal point in his career. The Black Star Line Festival in Accra this month was the end result of his long-term efforts to connect with Ghanaian musicians. The free one-day event, organised by Mensa and fellow Chicago artist Chance The Rapper, brought 52,000 people to see Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, T-Pain, Erykah Badu, Jeremih, and his own highly praised and passionate performance. Vic’s Skin & Masks art exhibition at Kavi Gupta Gallery and 93 Boyz, Illinois’ first Black-owned cannabis enterprise, have also helped establish culture in Chicago. The 29-year-Books old’s Before Bars project has given hundreds of books to impoverished correctional institutions.
