Two years ago, J. Cole and Dreamville Records partnered with HBO to release the Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming documentary, centered around a one-night only concert in the rapper’s hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Cole World and HBO now return to shine the light on deeper issues across America, specifically southern states, in the new documentary 4 Your Eyez Only.

Premiered on Saturday night (Apr. 15), the one-hour special focuses more on people in the black communities who don’t have a platform to express their concerns with various political and social issues, which has inspired the very music created on J. Cole’s latest platinum-selling album.

Directed by Scott Lazer, J. Cole takes on the role of an observer, hardly seen in the powerful documentary piece which travels to Jonesboro, Ark and Ferguson, MO. Music videos off the Roc Nation MC’s 4 Your Eyez Only LP, plus a brand-new song are also featured in the documentary.

Speaking with the New York Times in a rare interview, J. Cole spoke on his intentions in creating this new documentary with HBO. “I felt like it would be mad powerful for black people to see black people talking to each other,” said the 32-year-old. “And you see a rapper who’s considered one of the biggest in the game, just listening.”

He also adds, “These are people that never get to be heard, by the world or even by each other.” Watch J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only HBO documentary below.
