Killa – aka Donovan Payne – spent his youth bboying, dabbling in graffiti and rapping, whilst his initial love for soul and blues transitioned into hip-hop after his mother introduced him to marching band music. Now having taken the Dallas hip-hop scene by storm, he is known for his mink coats, BMWs and electrifying performances at a popular Thursday night Dallas hangout.Following the success of his ‘Laptops and Voicemails’ mixtape, which catapulted him into the local media spotlight, 88 Killa went on to co-found the Brain Gang Misfits hip-hop collective, whose members include the likes of Justus, who recently featured on Dr. Dre’s third studio album, ‘Compton: A Soundtrack’ and works closely and exclusively with fellowInterscope/Aftermath artists, as well as fellow DEFDISCO signee Ish D.

’88 Karats’ is Killa’s first release since his recent signing to DEFDISCO, whose roster boasts hip-hop heavyweights Public Enemy, ex-Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson’s Card Gang imprint, and fellow Texan Kaela Sinclair. The 6-track EP represents the continued refinement of the new ‘Dallas Sound’, which the Brain Gang Misfits are principally responsible for pioneering, featuring a more raw, stripped-back sound reminiscent of late-90s and early-2000s hip-hop releases and doing away with the pop polish which exemplifies rap music currently in the charts.

The EP features fellow Brain Gang members; female rapper Sam Lao, producers Ish D and Blue The Misfit as well as Erykah Badu‘s The Cannabinoids member, Picnictyme
