Jesus Cmplxx “Nü LA” Video

Jesus Cmplxx worked his dream job at Sony Music for ten years with artists like John Legend, Destiny’s Child, Oasis, Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, and numerous others. After becoming disenchanted with the lack of care in mainstream music, he quit to focus on his own art – a change that was storied in this Wall Street Journal article. He and his bandmate (Sway Clarke) eventually signed to Capitol Records US and Island UK and made a record with Nellee Hooper (Bjork, Sinead, Massive Attack). When it came time to release the album, the A&R team got fired and the masters never saw the light of day. He lost all the rights to his music in the process and now he’s regaining control by releasing independently.

“Nü LA” comes with a Dan Abramovici-directed video that is also filled with tension and surprise. These interpretations are totally subjective but, nevertheless, this new release undoubtedly confirms the artist’s desire to explore and create freely. In his own words:

“Nü LA” is just that song that lacks the need to appeal to a genre or boundaries. It inspired me to explore fidelity and sexuality through movement, and without offering easy answers.”
